The poet Alec Derwent Hope was born in Cooma in 1907. He was educated at Sydney University and Oxford, returning to Australia in 1932. He published many volumes of poetry as well as working for the ABC radio children's program The Argonauts and teaching at various institutions. He also worked as a critic and editor.
